We haven’t been to many garage sales lately, but I did get a chance to pop into the local thrift store. I picked up this pour-over acrylic painting for fifty cents. On the back, it’s stamped “Dana’s Pour Expressions,” which is funny to me because it’s a pun, but a really bad one. What would I do? I dunno…Pour Your Heart Out, For Richer/For Pour-er, Pour One Out. It’s really hard to stop once you flip the pun switch, and honestly, “pour” stops looking like a real word after a while.
I picked it up initially because it reminded me of a vortex. And what does a vortext need? An eldritch creature. So let’s try that.
Honestly, though, I didn’t like it. The pour-over paint was a strange texture and painting straight lines was hard as hell. I couldn’t make my tentacles look wonky in the right way. I snapped a picture, though, because I’ll try it again if I find another cast-off pour-over picture.
I wanted to keep part of the original vortex, so I taped off a few non-tentacle sections and put down an even layer of pink. Then blue, then added some pink back in. Trying to cover things evenly was super-hard. I should’ve gesso-ed that sucker and started from a better surface. Oh well.
I added a towhee and used a strip of vortex as the bottom of its nest. It cracks me up because these are annoying birds and I can totally imagine them co-opting eldritch horror to make a home. Who among us would not prop up our basement with a bit of Cthulu? Right. Just me.
I’m not super happy with this, only I’m not sure the vortex would survive another iteration. I’ll sit with it for a while.
