This week I finished John Battelle’s The Search, and it was everything I expected. He includes a nice background of the search industry, the particulars of Google’s rise to the top, and thought provoking speculation about how search will continue to change our lives.
You know what I felt after reading this book? Vindicated. Sometime in 2000, I interviewed with a vice president at a major ad agency for an Intranet job. She asked me what my favorite site was and I told her it was Google — she quickly proceeded to savage my choice. Google had a horrible, simple look! It was just search engine! What was I thinking! How could I possibly know anything about the Web! According to her, MTV’s flashy, mystery meat navigation would soon take over. Totally vindicated.
