I despair of getting RSS readers installed on company desktops so my co-workers can read feeds produced inside our firewall. We have standard desktops, and changes to that desktop don’t happen at the speed of business, IMHO. So, I thought that instead of lobbying for changes to the desktop, I’d go the route of web based readers. I can put our Intranet feeds in our DMZ, but I would need to password protect the content somehow.
A few questions for the web community:
Do password protected RSS feeds exist?
Are there any RSS readers that currently support secure feeds?
I’ll do some research over the week, but I wanted to put these questions out there. Thanks!
As far as I know, you can secure RSS feeds using the standard username:password stuff from https software (like apache). Most readers that I know of will support this usage then as well, by using http://username:password@domain.com/feed.rdf as the format. Hope that helps.
