Me: “Hello, my computer just rebooted itself and didn’t give me a chance to save any of my work.”
Help Desk: “Yes.”
Me: “Yes? What do you mean yes?!?”
Help Desk: “I’m sorry. There was a software push from the system. Your computer rebooted afterwards. It’s efficient.”
Me: “Well, the system just lost an hour’s worth of my work. Where’s the efficiency there?”
Help Desk: “I’m sorry…”
Me: “Yeah, yeah, you’re sorry. It wasn’t your fault, etc. What was so earth shattering that it required an immediate reboot? Couldn’t we have the option to put it off fifteen minutes?”
Help Desk: “I hear what you’re saying, but no, that’s not an option.”
Me: “Who do I talk to about this?”
Help Desk: “Well, those decisions are made at the system level.”
Me: “Yes. Who would that be? Who do I take my case to?”
Help Desk: “I’m sorry, You can talk to my boss.”
Me: “You just said your boss didn’t make that decision. Who-do-I-talk-to?”
Help Desk: “I don’t know. Those are system decisions.”
Me: “…I don’t believe there’s anyone capable of making a system decision.”
Help Desk: “Yes.”
Me: “Your good-natured agreement and sympathy aren’t helping the situation.”
Help Desk: “Yes. Why don’t you talk to my boss?”
Me: “Because he wouldn’t survive the conversation?”
Help Desk: “Yes. Have a good day.”
Me: “grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.”
The amazing oxymoron of “help desk”

Yes, that is true. However I’m more frustrated about someone making those decisions from a little room at the system level and not thinking about how people are effected, and perhaps, not caring. We’re under budget constraints, time constraints, etc. and THEY think to do this because it meets both of those constraints for their department — but not mine or any other — and then THEY hide where I can’t get to them to complain. I hate short-sightedness compared with heavy-handiness.
Basically, when body porportions start changing, it all goes to hell.
Damn, my blood pressure is rising again.

You can lead Management to knowledge, but you can’t make it think.

Ah…the “helpless desk”. We have one of those too. ;)
Greetings, found your site searching for Henry V, Act 3, Scene 1, Shakespeare. Go figure :D
I have always found it helpful to verbally abuse the help desk in situations like this, for example instead of Grrrrrrrrr, shouting “I WILL END YOU” can be far more effective in getting the point accross.
Hopefully, they will push updates at 4am in the future.
Scott
