Overheard at a project planning meeting today…
“A lot of people are starting to say that e-mail has jumped the shark. It’s on its way out.”
“No, a lot of people aren’t saying that.”
“They’re not?”
“No! I know you’re out there on the bleeding edge, but turn around and look at the wall of blood behind you. People do not think that way.”
“Not yet, but they will. Oh, they will.”
I heard somewhere that the younger generation uses IM and text messaging (on phones) almost exclusively. They go to email only to communicate with granny. Wish I had a link, but all I have is my email-using-codger memory.
Ya know, I’m all about email while at work, but when I get home… I’m bored with the email…it’s all crap anyway. After deleteing about 40 spam messages I find 3 valid emails from people talking to me…not people forwarding yet another chain letter or the “answer these questions” things but real messages telling me something. I think the text messaging on the phones and the IM stuff will take off. Email isn’t as instant as everyone assumes, and with the spam filters…once people can’t get email from friends and family or coworkers because of the amount of crap, they’ll switch. But I think it’ll be further down the road.

Yes, I happen to agree. I think e-mail is full of noise and low on signal.
Well, but a co-worker of mine cancelled the text messaging on her phone because she was getting spammed there… and charged for it, to boot. The junk mail will muddle up that mode of communication soon enough, too, and then it will likewise be all flash and no fire.
