The Noth-ern Gates

After enduring the trials and tribulations of a computer outage at O'Hare International Airport (ORD), I made it to New York three hours later than expected (thanks United Airlines -- I'll rant about you later). So I had to make a choice between shopping in SoHo or hoofing to Central Park to see the Christo

Slow E-mail Productivity Tip

43 Folders has five fast e-mail productivity tips, and I think it's a fine list. However, if you have more time and an interested group of people, I offer this suggestion: subject codes. In my organization, nearly every e-mail that's sent has one of the following subject codes in the title: AR: action required, the

Abusing Folkonomies…

I had some thoughts this morning about how to abuse the whole folkonomy trend. Concerns really, because I'm not sure these things haven't already happened: Ideological wars fought through tagging. Tag your opponent as "evil" or "wrong", "liberal" or "conservative" and have an army of information manipulators spread the tags through flickr, technorati and delicious.

Baby Name Wizard

Okay, here's a fun way to kill a few minutes: visit the Baby Name Wizard! You can check out any name and see its popularity ranking over time. Tammy seemed to hit its peak in the 1960s at number 14...Zesmerelda, on the other, has yet to make the list. *sigh*

Living on the Edge

Overheard at a project planning meeting today... "A lot of people are starting to say that e-mail has jumped the shark. It's on its way out." "No, a lot of people aren't saying that." "They're not?" "No! I know you're out there on the bleeding edge, but turn around and look at the wall of

How to fight “Feed Intimidation Syndrome”

I read Strange Attractor last week, and I have to say that many of my friends and co-workers aren't afflicted with feed overload syndrome. Nope, they're suffering from feed intimidation syndrome. They don't know where to get started on the Internet and seem overwhelmed by the technology that's out there. I don't blame them. So,

Get a feed!

~mild rant directed at friends who don't have feeds on their sites~ Hey, guys, there's no excuse for not having an RSS feed if you use Blogger. It's easy. Click on your settings tab, and then site feed. Select RSS (not Atom, pls) and give your feed a name...something original like rss.xml. Put your feed

Why ask why?

Yesterday a colleague asked me why I was teaching him about RSS. He thought it was cool, but didn't think it was my job to introduce employees to new technology. He right -- on paper my job is to manage a public web site. However, my job as I choose to define it is to

A Defense Against Information

My team of merry cohorts and I have been exposing to our co-workers to the world of RSS. We've provided an overview of RSS, an introduction to Bloglines and a starter set of feeds. People have promised to give it a try for a month or so and provide feedback to us. All well and

Revenge of the Right Brain

I loved this article on Wired "Revenge of the Right Brain": "...the curtain is rising on a new era, the Conceptual Age. If the Industrial Age was built on people's backs, and the Information Age on people's left hemispheres, the Conceptual Age is being built on people's right hemispheres. We've progressed from a society of
