RSS :: For Serious News Hounds? Or Everyone?

I had an fascinating discussion today with one of the company librarians. We were discusssing why Factiva was so popular here and the barriers to making RSS feeds a standard way of receiving news. Our talk came to an interesting conclusion: People don't want to spend time thinking about the quality of the news they

Year of the Blog? I don’t think so.

It seems everyone has a list of "blogs of the year" on their sites, and every newspaper and (Times) magazine I read is eager to claim this as the year of the blog. People, you are behind the times! I say it was the year of RSS. RSS completely changed the way I approached the

Music Has The Right To Be Sorted

I'm cleaning up my iPod, and find myself ponder several issues regarding personal music classification. The music industry has saddled me with their obscure terms leaving me mystified as to how to group bands by genre. Really, can someone explain to me the difference between "R&B/Soul" and "R&B" and then tell me which group Seal

Factiva — Still worth the money?

I'm having an argument right now with my company's library staff about the merits of using Factiva versus RSS feeds. I contend that we shouldn't be relying on Factiva for news feeds when Reuters, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and over a 150 other domestic newspapers have their content available in feeds.

Information Obligation

RSS feeds are wonderful -- I don't know how I managed to digest this much information before they existed. And RSS feeds are horrible -- why am I reading a 149 sites a day? Good golly, miss molly. I can't get away from the sites. I feel the need to check Bloglines at least 10

Merry CTA!

Me: "Excuse me, but can big kids get their picture taken with Santa, too?" CTA Employee: "As long as you don't get scared when it's your turn." Me: "Okay!" Me: "Hi Santa! Having a good day?" Santa: "Every day is good when you're Santa." Me: "I bet that's right." I know the CTA needs to

Why does Dominick’s want my birthdate?

Today I went to Dominick's, a Chicago grocery chain, to buy some last minute items for the party I'm throwing. I needed bourbon to make cherry bourbon balls for next week's cookie exchange, so I picked up a bottle while I was there. All was fine and dandy until I got to the checkout line.

Office Zen

(into the elevator) He: "Hey. Having a busy day?" Me: "Yes, I'm in meetings all day." He: "That's too bad." Me: "Poor me. I'm meeting-rich." He: "Rich who?" Me: "No, I'm meeting-rich." He: "Yeah, Rich who?" Me: "Rich isn't a person. I'm just wealthy with meetings." He: "Fine. Don't tell me." Me: "...okay, I'll keep

Colorstrology? Hrrrrmmmmm.

According to Colorstrology, my birthday colors are Sun Orange (Pantone 16-1257) and Sea Green (Pantone 16-5421). That's August 23 for those of you who don't your colors. There's a bit of astrology mumbo-jumbo that tells how the colors relate to my birthday and how they guide me through life. I can subscribe to monthly "color

Rent

I saw Rent tonight with my co-worker. I was all about the Producers, but I caved when he looked teary at the prospect of missing Rent. He has seen it at least five times. Five times, I swear. He declared this the best rendition he's seen. It should be good -- we were four rows
