If the CTA sells line naming rights to corporations, I’ll scream. I shudder to think what it would look like:
Brown Line — sponsored by UPS?
Purple Line — sponsored by Royal Caribbean Cruises?
Green Line — sponsored by the EPA?
Red Line — sponsored by Red M&Ms?
Orange Line — sponsored by Tropicana?
Or maybe they would change the stop names to product names. Instead of Belmont, we could have the iPod stop! Now approaching iPod…transfer to M&M, UPS, and Royal Carribean lines…
I will scream.
Me too. Scary thought.
OTOH, since my “ride it all I can” campaign to singlehandedly fund the CTA seems not to be as effective as the marketing materials led me to believe, I’m glad they’re thinking “outside the box” about fund-raising options.
I just hope they don’t choose this one.

Say it ain’t so!
Might that mean that the corporations would also tinker with how their line is operated or scheduled? What about corporate mergers and name changes, such as in case the original buyer goes out of business?
There is already some limited revenue being generated by adverts on the outsides of buses and trains. Let’s just hope they come to their senses before the ink is dry on any deal to “sell” the CTA and sell out those of us who depend upon it.

Of course a sponsorship with Timex might motivate them to you know…be on time more often?
One could only hope.
