Ego Subscription Surfing…

I've always been a bit fascinated by how people organize their bookmarks. #Geek  Anyway, I've noticed that some folks have subscribed to the feed for this site (hello! welcome!) and I couldn't help but wonder what folder my feed would live in. Would I be left hanging in an unordered list? Would I be alphabetized

RSS Starter Set?

One of the problems I've been wrestling with at work is how to get a good mix of feeds that are particular to our employees' line of work, and then find a way to deliver those subscriptions so I don't have to set up each and every reader in my company. Today I may have

All Through the House, Not a Creature Was Aggregating

Well, except me. I've spent some time today working at my new hobby -- blogline subscriber surfing. This is the practice of clicking on the subscriber list in bloglines and checking out what people are subscribed to. Say I was interested in who was also subscribed to The Accidental Hedonist's RSS feed and wanted to

A Look Ahead to 2005

John Battelle has published his predictions for 2005, and he's got some great ideas. I have a few things I'd like to add though I wouldn't classify these as predictions so much as wistful longings/scarey inklings. Ahem. My list for 2005: RFID sewn into clothing hits big when it's paired with a handheld fashion device

RSS, Blogs, Wikis & Browser-Based Bookmark Tools :: A Presentation

The following is a presentation I gave three months ago to my department on emerging web technologies. I've made some inquiries, and very few people have looked at these things much less brought them into daily usage. I think it's an interesting hunk of information, but something is obviously lacking. Thoughts? RSS - Real Simple

RSS :: For Serious News Hounds? Or Everyone?

I had an fascinating discussion today with one of the company librarians. We were discusssing why Factiva was so popular here and the barriers to making RSS feeds a standard way of receiving news. Our talk came to an interesting conclusion: People don't want to spend time thinking about the quality of the news they

Year of the Blog? I don’t think so.

It seems everyone has a list of "blogs of the year" on their sites, and every newspaper and (Times) magazine I read is eager to claim this as the year of the blog. People, you are behind the times! I say it was the year of RSS. RSS completely changed the way I approached the

Music Has The Right To Be Sorted

I'm cleaning up my iPod, and find myself ponder several issues regarding personal music classification. The music industry has saddled me with their obscure terms leaving me mystified as to how to group bands by genre. Really, can someone explain to me the difference between "R&B/Soul" and "R&B" and then tell me which group Seal

Factiva — Still worth the money?

I'm having an argument right now with my company's library staff about the merits of using Factiva versus RSS feeds. I contend that we shouldn't be relying on Factiva for news feeds when Reuters, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and over a 150 other domestic newspapers have their content available in feeds.

Information Obligation

RSS feeds are wonderful -- I don't know how I managed to digest this much information before they existed. And RSS feeds are horrible -- why am I reading a 149 sites a day? Good golly, miss molly. I can't get away from the sites. I feel the need to check Bloglines at least 10
